Charles Read Academy 2 – Walton Academy 6

On Wednesday 19 March, Walton Academy’s year 9 football team extended their unbeaten run with an impressive away victory against Charles Read Academy. The match was a thrilling encounter, showcasing both individual brilliance and outstanding team cohesion.

The game began with a cagey opening ten minutes, as both sides struggled to maintain possession. Walton soon found their spark, thanks to a moment of individual magic from Lyric, who intercepted a goal kick, beat two defenders, and fired a shot at goal. Although the keeper made an initial save, Lyric reacted quickest to convert the rebound and give Walton the lead.

Despite sustained pressure throughout the remainder of the first half, Walton were unable to add to their advantage. A crucial save from Oliver just before the break ensured the team held their 1-0 lead going into half-time.

The second half saw a noticeable shift in momentum. Following tactical adjustments during the interval, Walton began to move the ball with greater purpose and fluidity. Will was instrumental in setting the tempo, covering every blade of grass and pushing the team forward. Walton were soon rewarded when Toby was brought down in the box and calmly stepped up to convert the resulting penalty.

Moments later came the goal of the match – a brilliant exchange of quick passes between Toby and Daniel on the right wing ended with a perfectly timed cutback from Daniel, allowing Toby to finish smartly at the near post with his weaker foot.

As the game opened up, further changes allowed fresh legs to make an impact. Walton’s fourth goal came from a well-delivered corner by Toby, which was met by a powerful header from Lyric, his second of the match. Charles Read responded with two quick goals to reduce the deficit, but Walton showed great resilience and composure. Daniel led by example, lifting the team’s energy in the closing stages. He struck a sensational effort from distance into the bottom corner and followed it up with another goal just before the final whistle, sealing a 6-2 victory.

This was another outstanding performance from the Year 9 team, marked by a combination of skill, determination and tactical discipline. Congratulations to the entire squad for maintaining their unbeaten run and continuing to impress with their spirit, energy and teamwork. A special mention goes to Toby, Daniel and Lyric, who shared the Player of the Match honours for their standout contributions throughout the game.
